FEBRUARY 5, 1999

A NEW BOARD of directors is elected for 1999. As always, new faces bring new ideas to the association.


JANUARY 6, 1999

THE SEMBLER CO. wants to redevelop the site of Watson's market with a new Eckerd pharmacy, which would entail tearing down several existing buildings, and also closing the 4th Street end of the alley between 8th and 9th Avenues.

THE CITY PARKS DEPARTMENT wants to plant more trees throughout the neighborhoods, and so it is offering discounted trees to homeowners.


NOVEMBER 23, 1998

SOME SEVEN YEARS AGO, the North Shore Neighborhood Association wanted the city to install what would now be called "traffic calming" devices at speeding trouble spots throughout the neighborhood . . . As they say, it's deja vu all over again.


NOVEMBER 10, 1998

AFTER A DELAY OF ABOUT ONE YEAR due to an ownership change, the Renaissance Vinoy Resort is moving ahead with its plans for a new conference center.


NOVEMBER 3, 1998

THE OWNERS OF the Amoco station at 4th Street N and 22nd Avenue now have the city's permission to add a car wash to their facility, and to put a retail business into a vacant outbuilding.

CRIME WATCH EFFORT - Scott MacDonald is a police officer, a member of the NSNA Board of Directors, and a guy with a lot of ideas about stopping crime before it happens. He is now working to create an effective Crime Watch organization in the neighborhood. He can use your help.

MAJOR HOME RENOVATIONS and new construction in the North Shore neighborhood are governed by something called the Neighborhood Design Review ordinance. You may have heard of it, but don't know the details.

GREENING OF NORTH SHORE - A professional landscaping company has taken over the chore of maintaining the greenery around the neighborhood entry monuments, as well as several traffic islands. At its meeting in January, the NSNA Board of Directors reached an agreement under which the the maintenance will be done in exchange for advertising space in the neighborhood newsletter.

REDEVELOPMENT RULES - In December, the St. Petersburg Board of Adjustment approved a developer's proposal to tear down a derelict motel at 750 3rd Street N and replace it with six townhouses. Neighbors are concerned about the high density of the project, and the NSNA is looking into the rules under which the project was approved. Those rules apply only to special Neighborhood Redevelopment Districts. The southwest corner of the Old Northeast was declared such a district about eight years ago.

COUNCIL SUPPORTS TRAFFIC PLAN - The City Council at its meeting on January 15 supported the North Shore Neighborhood Traffic Plan by approving proposed changes to the city's Comprehensive Plan. Their action means that the stop signs installed as part of the Traffic Plan will most likely remain. Final action on the Comprehensive Plan, however, won't come until May or later.

4TH STREET BEAUTIFICATION - Over the years, there have been various attempts at sprucing up 4th Street N, especially along the section abutting the North Shore neighborhood, but all have ultimately failed. Now, a group of people representing several neighborhoods, 4th Street businesses and the city, are beginning a new effort. This one is aimed at shifting control of 4th Street N planning from the State of Florida to the City of St. Petersburg.

HEX BLOCK STATUS - St. Petersburg changes its policy on sidewalk repairs. Will this cause the loss of even more of the neighborhood's antique hex-block sidewalks?

A YOUNGER NEIGHBORHOOD - Census data show a major shift in the age of the population of the North Shore neighborhood.
